Nonprofit equine-therapy ranch expands programs for children, teens, and young adults with autism and mental health challenges

Portland, Ore. — August 20, 2025 — Joy for Life, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon, today announced that Peter Ellis, renowned rider and former King’s Guard from London, has joined the organization as Director of Ranch & Program Development.

Joy for Life provides equine-assisted therapy, paid ranch work, and mentorship for children, teens, and young adults facing autism and mental health challenges. With licensed therapists and mentors guiding each step, the program uses the intuitive power of horses—some of them rescues—to restore dignity, purpose, and confidence. The nonprofit’s guiding belief is simple: This is where Horses Heal, and Purpose Begins.

“Horses meet people where they are—without judgment,” said Ellis. “Our work transforms that bond into progress for young people navigating autism and mental health struggles.”

“Peter’s skill and compassion bring international recognition to our mission,” said Ryan L. Hopman, Ph.D., co-founder of Joy for Life. “He strengthens our ability to deliver real healing and real structure to those who need it most.”
